Reset All Default Settings


What do you do when there’s nothing to do?

When you’re bored, tired, or have a break in the day: what do you do?

What’s your default setting?

Lately I’ve been thinking about my own defaults. I usually play Two Dots, scroll social media, or watch TV. I don’t like that I do that. I want a new default setting.

A part of me believes that I go into default mode because it’s easy. Because it prevents me from thinking thoughts. It’s a mind numbing device. I don't actually know what I think about most of the time (aside from the task at hand whatever that may be) because I keep myself distracted.

In recent years, I've grown a lot personally and spiritually and I've embraced the belief that your thoughts create your life.

This is a more "new age" philosophy if I had to describe it but it's similar to "you are what you eat". Others have worded it as "where focus goes, energy flows." No matter how you say it, the meaning is the same: what you think about is what you are generating in your life. (Believe it or not, YOU'RE in control!)


I urge you to think about the many times you had negative thoughts about a situation....the situation got worse, didn't it? If you're always thinking negatively, you will only attract more negativity in your life. Say or do negative things and it will come back around to you. Many people understand this as "karma". There's also the Law of Attraction (on which the book/movie The Secret is based on and which many thought leaders such as Abraham Hicks teach about).

Every time someone mentions the Law of Attraction in a meditation, podcast, or article it makes me pause. What do I think about most of the time? Honestly, the answer is I'm not sure, because my Default Mode is to distract myself from thinking - negatively or positively - and I realized that numbing out and not thinking is almost as bad as negative thinking.

I want to change my behavior, stop numbing out, and start thinking more intentionally and positively but it can be so challenging sometimes to reprogram ourselves. I wish it was as easy as pressing the Reset All Settings button and we instantly lose the old programming and stories we’ve been telling ourselves that no longer serve us. But it’s not easy because working through challenges that help us to grow more into who we are meant to be.


We’re all doing the best we can. Perhaps it’s best to start with baby steps and make one change per day. Watch 1 hour of TV instead of 2, read an inspirational article online instead of being sucked in to negative news stories or scrolling, play a board game or work on a puzzle, find a hobby.  Today, I caught myself going into Default Mode and made a different choice: I went to my dear friend Meg Haines' website of AMAZING resources and picked one. A new setting.

We can make choices that fill us up instead of drain us or keep us small by distracting us from attracting more of what we want into our life and less of what we don't.

The best part? Each moment is an opportunity to hit that Default Settings button and make changes that lead to happier and healthier lives.
